Resultative Markedness and Implicational Hierarchies

چکیده

This is because the former are lexically implicated or entailed, and thus are more available and less expensive than the latter in the sense that they involve less practical reasoning. In addition, in terms of the strong-weak distinction, an implicational universal can be posited, namely that if a language has strong resultatives, it must have weak resultatives as well (Washio 1999, 2002). Second, from a crosslinguistic point of view, the subject-oriented reading (of resultatives which involve an unergative or transitive causing predicate) (see (2)), the scare reading ((3)), and the surface unaccusative frame ((4)) found with Mandarin resultatives are all marked.

Implicational markedness and frequency in constraint-based computational models of phonological learning.

This study examines the interacting roles of implicational markedness and frequency from the joint perspectives of formal linguistic theory, phonological acquisition and computational modeling. The hypothesis that child grammars are rankings of universal constraints, as in Optimality Theory (Prince & Smolensky, 1993/2004), that learning involves a gradual transition from an unmarked initial sta...

Mental salience and grammatical form: toward a framework for salience metrics in natural language generation

ing from these minor conceptual difficulties, however, the markedness hierarchy established so far corresponds to the ‘consensus hierarchy’ that was proposed in Sect. 2.1.4.1 as a generalization over different hierarchies of referring expressions found in linguistic literature. Correspondingly, hierarchies of referring expressions as discussed in Sect. 2.1.2 can be interpreted as markedness hie...

Sonority variation in Stochastic Optimality Theory: Implications for markedness hierarchies

Constraints based on the sonority scale and other markedness hierarchies have been formalized in two different ways: as scale-partition constraint families, with a universally fixed ranking, and as stringency constraint families, where the constraints stand in subset relations and their ranking is not universal. We identify a new empirical domain where these two approaches make different predic...

Constraining syntagmatic interaction of grammatical categories through markedness hierarchies: The case of perfective presents

In this paper I propose a general approach to the study of constraints on cooccurrence of grammatical categories and present one case study of a functionally infelicitous combination from the domain of TAM categories, the present perfective. It is argued that constraints on co-occurrence of particular categories can be accounted for in terms of local markedness and markedness hierarchies. This ...
